Why Quality Artwork Matters: Vector Logos vs Low-Resolution Images

Your logo might look great on a phone screen, but will it look just as sharp printed across a shirt, hoodie or team uniform?

The quality of your original artwork plays a big part in the finished result. Low-resolution images can produce blurry edges, visible pixels and lost detail. Starting with suitable artwork helps your branding look clean, consistent and professional.

At Apex Apparel, we offer logo creation, artwork recreation, vectorisation and custom graphic design services at reasonable rates to help you achieve a high-quality finish.

What Is a Vector Logo?

Vector artwork is created using mathematically defined lines, curves and shapes rather than a fixed grid of pixels. This allows it to be enlarged or reduced without losing sharpness.

The same vector logo can be used for a small chest print or a large back design while maintaining clean edges and clear detail.

Common vector file formats include AI, EPS, SVG and PDF. However, the file extension alone does not guarantee vector artwork—a PDF, for example, can still contain a low-resolution image.

How Are JPEG and PNG Files Different?

JPEG and PNG files are raster images, meaning they are made up of pixels. They have a fixed amount of detail, so enlarging them too much can make individual pixels visible and edges appear rough or blurry.

JPEG files can also develop compression marks around text and graphics, particularly when repeatedly saved or heavily compressed. PNG files support transparent backgrounds, but a transparent background does not automatically mean the artwork is high resolution or suitable for printing.

Raster images can still produce excellent prints when they have enough resolution at the intended print size. They are often the right choice for photographs, detailed illustrations and textured artwork.

The key is using the right file for the design and its intended use.

Why Low-Quality Artwork Can Affect Your Apparel

Artwork downloaded from social media, copied from a website or supplied as a screenshot is often too small for garment printing.

Common problems include:

  • Blurry lettering and unclear small text

  • Jagged or pixelated outlines

  • Missing fine details

  • Unwanted backgrounds

  • Compression marks around logos and graphics

Simply increasing the image dimensions or changing the resolution setting to “300 dpi” will not restore detail that is missing from the original file.

Preparing the artwork properly before production gives your design the best starting point for a professional finish.

The Benefits of Vector Artwork

For logos, lettering and clean graphic elements, vector artwork offers several advantages.

Sharp results at different sizes
Your artwork can be resized to suit different garments and print placements without becoming pixelated.

Easier colour and layout changes
Individual shapes, colours and text elements can be adjusted more accurately when the vector artwork is properly constructed.

Consistent branding
A quality master logo helps maintain a consistent appearance across uniforms, teamwear, accessories and other branded materials.

Greater flexibility for future projects
Suitable vector artwork can be adapted for different production methods, although some processes, such as embroidery, require additional preparation.

Only Have a Screenshot or an Old Logo?

You may still have options.

Depending on the artwork, we can redraw your logo, recreate missing elements, clean up rough edges, remove unwanted backgrounds or convert suitable graphics into vector format.

Vectorisation involves more than saving an image as an SVG or PDF. Low-quality automatic tracing can create uneven curves, distorted lettering and unnecessary shapes. Careful recreation and refinement help produce cleaner, more usable artwork.

If the original image is unclear, we may need your input to confirm small details or lettering.

Can AI-Generated Designs Be Used for Printing?

AI-generated artwork can be a useful starting point for a custom design, but it often needs preparation before production.

Common issues include distorted text, inconsistent details, rough edges and insufficient resolution. Some designs can be recreated as vector artwork, while detailed illustrations may be better prepared as high-resolution raster files.

Our team can review your AI-generated design and advise on the most suitable approach.
